Hobart B. Lytal: "Mr. Quinlan"

Hobart B. Lytal (1908–1990) was a lifelong Quinlan resident whose decades of service to the community earned him the affectionate title of "Mr. Quinlan". His deep-rooted love for local athletics and civic duty is permanently honored through the naming of Lytal Field, Quinlan’s football field, the home of the Quinlan Panthers.

Civic Leadership and Professional Journey

Born and raised in Quinlan, Mr. Lytal graduated from Quinlan High School in 1926. Though he briefly trained as a pharmacist, he realized within two days of working in Dallas that his heart belonged to his hometown.

  • Quinlan Postmaster: After returning home in 1930 to work as a postal clerk, he was appointed by President Roosevelt as the Quinlan Postmaster in 1933, a position he held for 42 years.
  • Community Voice: He served as a correspondent for the Greenville Herald-Banner for over 50 years.
  • Dedicated Service: He was a deacon for the First Baptist Church, secretary for the Quinlan Chamber of Commerce for 25 years, and a member of the Quinlan Masonic Lodge for decades.
 

A Legacy in Athletics

Mr. Lytal was an avid Panther athlete, fan, and official who believed every sport was worth loving.

  • Officiating Fame: For 25 years, he gained recognition as an official for the Southwest Conference Officials Association in football, basketball, and baseball.
  • Pioneering Official: In 1951, he became the first Texan ever selected to officiate the National Women’s Basketball Tournament in Missouri.
  • The Hobart B. Lytal Award: Established by Quinlan ISD in 1970, this award is given annually to athletes who exhibit strong character, teamwork, dedication, and sportsmanship.
 

Continued Philanthropy and Family Legacy

The Lytal family’s impact spans nearly a century, characterized by a commitment to the students and the history of Quinlan ISD.
 
      • Lytal Scholarships: Through the support of an anonymous donor who values the Lytal family legacy, $500 scholarships are now awarded annually to one boy and one girl who letter in multiple sports while maintaining good academic standing. Among those awarded include current board president and 1976 winner, Kenny Stone.
      • Generational Impact: His wife, Juanita Lytal, was a dedicated Quinlan ISD teacher for 37 years. His son, Hobart Wade Lytal, followed in his athletic and service-minded footsteps, later being inducted into the QISD Hall of Fame.
      • A Community Tradition: His service to the Quinlan community and Quinlan ISD in its earliest years, spanning seven decades, earned him the name “Mr. Quinlan.”
