Charlie Boyd Thompson: A Lifetime of Service
Charlie Boyd Thompson (1936–present) holds a unique place in district history as a former student, graduate, teacher, coach, principal, and superintendent. His entire life and career have centered around the Quinlan community, a devotion that is honored through the naming of Thompson Middle School.
Educational Leadership and Impact
Mr. Thompson spent 33 years in Quinlan schools, beginning his career in 1958 and eventually succeeding his mentor, W.H. Ford Jr., as superintendent. He was a firm believer in professional growth and staying "up with the times" to better serve his students.
- Superintendent Tenure: He served as QISD Superintendent from 1983 to 1993, following the retirement of W.H. Ford Jr.
- Athletic Development: He was highly influential in bringing competitive sports to the community, coaching basketball, football, and baseball at both the junior high and high school levels.
- A Successor’s Journey: Inspired by Superintendent W.H. Ford Jr., a short-term substitute teaching position in Quinlan turned into a lifelong calling in education.
- Professional Advocacy: He was a long-standing member of several prestigious organizations, including the Texas Association of School Administrators and the Texas State Teachers Association.
Continued Philanthropy and Legacy
Mr. Thompson remains instrumental in giving back to the district through substantial financial support for future graduates:
- The Charlie B. Thompson Scholarship: Established in 2015 by his son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Shari Thompson, this scholarship awards $20,000 annually to a highly scholarly QISD student.
- The Wanda Thompson Scholarship: In 2026, Charlie and his daughter, Sharon, created this scholarship in memory of his late wife, Wanda Williams Thompson. As a 1952 QHS graduate and active community member in her own right, she was the empowering force behind his success.
- Ongoing Commitment: Charlie and his family continue to serve on the QISD Scholarship Committee to this day, ensuring a personal hand in the future of Quinlan's youth.
Professional and Personal Journey
Mr. Thompson's roots in Quinlan run deep, from his early school days to his years of district leadership:
- Early Years: He grew up in the Sunset community and transferred to Quinlan ISD during school consolidation, graduating in 1954.
- High School Highlights: A standout athlete and leader, he was the captain of the QHS basketball team, an officer in the FFA, and a recipient of the prestigious Balfour Award.
- Education: He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from East Texas State College, followed by a Master of Education from Sam Houston State College in 1969.
- Family: He married Wanda Williams (QHS Class of 1952), and together they raised three children—Vicki, Sharon, and Charles Clint—all of whom are Ford High School graduates.
Community Leadership
Mr. Thompson was a tireless advocate for the town of Quinlan beyond the school campus:
- Youth Sports: He helped organize and served as the first president of the Quinlan Sports Association and was deeply involved in Quinlan Little League.
- Community Service: He has served numerous terms on the Quinlan City Council and the Quinlan Economic Development Board.
- Civic Service: Further, he served as a Scout Master for the Boy Scouts and was an original board member of Lake Point Hospital in Rowlett for 17 years.
- QISD Hall of Fame: Inducted in 2008 alongside other district icons for his enduring impact on the community.
C.B. Thompson Middle School was named in his honor, and the spirit of Charlie Thompson and his strong belief in the children of this community will last throughout our days.
